Waiting For Guffman

Although this film is absolutely hysterical at times, I feel it still falls a bit short overall. Our surprising introductions to the bizarre characters is probably the highpoint of the piece. I think it works because Christopher Guest has obviously well observed documentaries of the past. He realized that putting funny characters in those seemingly real situations makes for a new style of surreal humor. The problem is that it gets old quickly. After we meet and figure out every character (I must with the exception of Guffman), they become predictable. It’s nothing really new though, once you’ve seen one Guest mockumentary you’ve pretty much seen them all.
