War Game

I found War Game to be a clever mockumentary in that it was not just a shock tactic about the impending doom of war, but it also reminded the viewer that this in fact did happen - although without the tongue in cheek humour. This humour is also what made the film all the more disturbing. One was left torn, wondering if it was okay to laugh at the police "aiding" the British doctors by shooting burn victims in the head. While the film is designed to look like a documentary, subtle reminders bring it outside of the form, i.e. subtitles telling the audience that this is what COULD happen IF...etc. The unrealistic elements added a humorous tone to the film, like the soldiers directly addressing the camera while they are under attack, which is in conjunction with real war footage from Germany and Russia. This film plays with the viewer's willing suspension of disbelief.

The humor in War Game was used perfectly because it allowed an even better sense of reality. Funny things happen everyday, even in the most dramatic of settings. We may laugh at times, but it might not be the proper response to a certain situation. The film creates some humor because of how much like reall ife it can be. When the officers knock from door to door, we may laugh at people's reactions, but this is very much how some people would react in that type of situation.
