Bill Nichols/ The Fiction of Objectivity

In Nichol's article about realism and objectivity, he bring up the instance of the documentary maker. A filmmaker who decides to shoot a documentary separates himself from the activist in that while activists can pursue a cause on their own terms, filmmakers cannot. When making a documentary, one must represent more than one side in order to keep some notion of objectivity. Although a filmmaker can personally feel strongly about an issue, he can only construct his film in a way that suggests his stance, otherwise it becomes propaganda.
If you were to make a documentary, in order to keep objectivity the events must be reported as they happened historically. Any people or institutions involved must have their accounts of the events observed with skepticism. I personally feel that objectivity is a myth in film making. Objectivity is only possible when dealing with facts without commentary or outside representation. You can make a documentary about an apple on a table. It's true that the apple was on the table, but the camera will always suggest more than necessary. How is the apple shot? How is it framed? How close are we to it? What does it represent? How long do we see it? Who shot the film and why? Even though these questions may not have any relevancy to the film- or even the fact of the apple being on the table- the fact that they can and will eventually be raised strips the "documentary" of it's objectivity.
