From Motion to Stories

The Lumiere shorts shown in class were of simple actions that were designed more to show off the new technology of motion of film rather then actual content. What was filmed are now considered scenes from ‘everyday life’; workers leaving their job, dancers, and the demolition of a building, etc. Lumiere saw how he could manipulate film even then when he used the demolition of a building and rewound it. As the years went by more people saw how they could make stories with this new technology, so A Trip to the Moon, Great Train Robbery, and Uncle Josh at the Morning Picture Show were created. With these films, an audience could see how far a movie would take them and inspire others to experiment with the tools of film.
